We spend much of the day indoors. Bringing planting into an office should not be treated as decoration added at the end, but as a spatial decision able to change how a place is perceived and used. At Edificio ARA in Arturo Soria, biophilic landscape design enters into conversation with the architecture, introducing depth, variation and a scale closer to the people within it.

Plants accompany movement, soften edges and offer small moments of visual rest. Their presence changes with light and time, in contrast to the stability of built materials. The planting brings a natural point of reference to the daily working environment.

Before choosing plants, we assess the building’s growing conditions. Orientation, daylight, climate control, patterns of movement and the relationship between spaces determine what can happen and where. The success of an interior landscape depends on remembering that plants need suitable growing conditions. The quantity and quality of light, proximity to air vents, shifts in temperature and available humidity determine which species can thrive. The design begins with these conditions, avoiding an attractive first image that later demands constant replacement.

Good selection reduces resource use, maintenance and plant stress. Where daylight is insufficient, technical support is considered in keeping with the building’s use. Substrates, drainage and irrigation are also defined to make precise care possible. Sustainable planting in a workplace is not simply about adding green, but about creating the conditions for it to remain healthy and retain its role within the project.

Future care is part of the project from the beginning. Access, irrigation and growth are anticipated so maintenance does not interrupt the working day. Good landscape design in Madrid is also measured over time: by how readily it can be cared for, the resources it needs and its ability to continue supporting wellbeing.
